【长余辉夜光粉】是一种节能环保蓄光发光粉末，在受到自然光、灯光、紫外光等照射后，能把光能储存起来，同时缓慢地以可见光的形式释放出来，所以夜光粉吸光后在夜间或者黑暗处仍能看到持续发光现象，发光时间数小时，因其余辉时间相对短效硫化锌长很多，所以又称为长余辉。常见的长余辉材料是稀土激活的铝酸锶（SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+）。

【光致发光】（Photoluminescence，简称PL）是冷发光的一种，指物质吸收光子（或电磁波）后重新辐射出光子（或电磁波）的过程。 从量子力学理论上，这一过程可以描述为物质吸收光子跃迁到较高能级的激发态后返回低能态，同时放出光子的过程。即材料在有外界光源照射时，获得能量，产生激发导致发光的现象，它大致经过吸收、储存及发光三个主要阶段。光致发光可按延迟时间分为荧光（Fluorescence）和磷光（Phosphorescence），二者的区别是，一旦激发光源被移除，荧光就会迅速消失，而磷光会持续发光。长余辉夜光粉是光致发光的一种磷光材料。
【激发光源】激发发光材料的光源，根据标准的不同，激发光源也有差异，目前多数标准是采用D65标准光源东芝标准D65氙气灯管。
【余辉时间】根据相应的标准，在规定的光源下，按照标准规定的激发时间激发停止后，发光亮度衰减到标准规定的最低亮度的时间。每各时刻的辉度可以用辉度计测量，中邦使用的辉度计：柯尼卡美能达LS-150
【激发时间】长余辉发光材料受光照射的时间。
【照度】是光照强度的简称，指单位面积上所接受可见光的光通量。用于指示光照的强弱和物体表面积被照明程度的量。中邦使用的照度计：柯尼卡美能达T-10A。
【勒克斯】是照度的单位。等于1流明(lumen)的光通量(Luminous flux)均匀照在1平方米表面上所产生的照度。符号Lux 或LX。适宜于阅读的照度约为60勒克斯
【坎德拉】发光亮度的单位，符号cd/㎡。长余辉发光材料的发光亮度常用毫坎德拉作为单位，符号mcd/㎡。人眼能感知的最低亮度是0.32 mcd/㎡。
